Long-term effects of amyloid-beta buildup in human lab-grown support brain cells

Updated

Abstract

Astrocytes exposed to aggregated amyloid-beta (Aβ) retain frequent Aβ-inclusions that are enclosed within LAMP1-positive organelles over time.

  • Long-term cultured astrocytes exhibited sustained markers associated with reactivity.
  • Accumulation of Aβ within astrocytes led to swelling of the endoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria.
  • Increased secretion of the cytokine CCL2/MCP-1 was observed in astrocytes with Aβ-accumulation.
  • Formation of pathological lipid structures was noted in astrocytes exposed to Aβ.
