How Different Anesthesia Types May Affect Thinking Skills After Chest Surgery in Older Adults

Updated

Abstract

POCD incidence was 10.0% in the group receiving sevoflurane with dexmedetomidine, significantly lower than the 40.0% incidence in the sevoflurane-only group one day post-surgery.

  • Elderly patients receiving a combination of propofol, sevoflurane, and dexmedetomidine exhibited lower rates of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) shortly after surgery.
  • No significant differences in POCD incidence were observed among the anesthesia groups at 7, 30, and 90 days postoperatively.
  • Education level was found to be negatively correlated with POCD incidence, suggesting that higher education may reduce risk.
  • Longer single lung ventilation times were positively correlated with higher POCD incidence, indicating a potential risk factor.
