Use of anti-diabetic drugs linked to lower risk of Parkinson's disease in the community

Updated

Abstract

The study included 86,229 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).

  • Certain anti-diabetic drugs may be associated with a reduced risk of Parkinson's disease (PD) in individuals with T2DM.
  • Compared to metformin, DPP4 inhibitors are associated with a lower PD risk (HR = 0.60).
  • Meglitinides also show a reduced PD risk compared to metformin (HR = 0.63).
  • GLP-1 agonists are linked to a significant decrease in PD risk (HR = 0.54).
  • SGLT2 inhibitors are associated with the lowest PD risk among the examined drugs (HR = 0.15).
