How Ginseng Sugars and Active Compounds Affect Gut Bacteria to Reduce Obesity from a High-Fat Diet

Updated

Abstract

Ginseng polysaccharides (GP) and ginsenosides (GS) effectively prevent adiposity in high-fat diet-fed mice.

  • Both GP and GS may mediate their anti-obesity effects through gut microbiota.
  • Chemical analysis identified diverse glycosyl groups in GP and GS.
  • Metagenomic data indicated that GP and GS enriched specific bacterial species capable of utilizing glycosyl groups.
  • Bacterial species enriched by GP and GS possess functional genes associated with short-chain fatty acid synthesis and intestinal gluconeogenesis.
  • Activation of SCFA-GLP-1/PYY signaling and intestinal gluconeogenesis is linked to the administration of GP and GS.
