Plant root sugars may slow high-fat diet obesity by changing gut bacteria and their products

Updated

Abstract

PG1 reduced obesity and metabolic disturbances in mice fed a high-fat diet.

  • PG1 treatment effectively inhibited weight gain and reduced dyslipidemia and inflammation caused by a high-fat diet.
  • The treatment promoted an increase in bacteria that produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs).
  • Gene expression of GPR41 and GPR43 was enhanced, along with elevated levels of GLP-1 and PYY hormones.
  • PG1 improved circulating levels of leptin and adiponectin, which are involved in regulating metabolism.
  • The treatment altered the gut microbiota, increasing the abundance of bacteria that convert primary bile acids into secondary forms.
  • This change in gut bacteria led to enhanced liver cholesterol metabolism and the synthesis of new bile acids.
