No new class of antibiotics has been developed in the past decade despite rising challenges from antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

  • AMR is increasingly diminishing the effectiveness of many first-line antibiotics due to overuse and misuse.
  • Recent strategies to combat AMR include the use of antimicrobial peptides, phage therapy, and CRISPR-Cas gene editing.
  • Innovative tactics such as nanomaterial-based antimicrobials and immunomodulatory agents are being explored as alternatives to traditional antibiotics.
  • There is a shift towards integrated next-generation therapeutics that combine various approaches to address drug-resistant pathogens.
  • Collaboration among researchers, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the pharmaceutical sector is essential to tackle the AMR crisis.
