Abstract

12.3% of individuals with an emergency department visit for cannabis experienced an incident healthcare visit for an anxiety disorder within 3 years.

  • Individuals with an emergency department visit due to cannabis had a 3.7-fold increased risk of subsequent healthcare visits for anxiety disorders compared to the general population.
  • In a secondary analysis excluding those with prior outpatient anxiety care, 23.6% of individuals with cannabis-related ED visits had an incident anxiety-related healthcare visit within 3 years.
  • The adjusted hazard ratio for the risk of anxiety disorders following cannabis use was 3.88 when compared to the general population.
  • The increased risk of anxiety disorder healthcare visits was consistent across all age and sex categories.
  • Younger males exhibited a higher risk (aHR 5.67) than younger females (aHR 3.22) following cannabis-related ED visits.
