Psilocybin rewired prefrontal circuits in mice — but only for one specific type of cognitive failure
Psychedelic research had a busy week, and the headline isn't 'mushrooms cure everything.'
It's more interesting than that: the same drug can fix one broken brain circuit and completely miss another.
🧠 Psilocybin Fixed Cognitive Flexibility — But Only When the Right Circuit Was Broken
- Using optogenetic models in mice, researchers triggered two distinct types of cognitive inflexibility, then gave psilocybin to both groups. It rescued one. It did nothing for the other.

- Micro-phenomenological interviews with 23 participants who received intravenous DMT during simultaneous brain imaging revealed a consistent sequence: bodily effects came first, then visual and auditory ones, then encounters with perceived presences.

The week's evidence collectively tightens one uncomfortable question: if psilocybin's effects depend on the broken circuit, the patient's sex, the room they're sitting in, and their underlying genetics — how do you design a trial that captures all of that? The precision is promising. The methodology hasn't caught up yet.
