How appetite changes after calorie cutting with almond-rich versus nut-free diets

Updated

Abstract

Fasting ghrelin decreased in participants consuming almonds, while it increased in those consuming carbohydrate-rich snack bars.

  • Leptin levels increased more significantly in the almond group compared to the snack bar group after weight maintenance.
  • Fasting glucagon and pancreatic polypeptide levels were consistently higher in the almond group at all measurement points.
  • Subjective hunger ratings increased for both groups over time, but buffet energy intake declined, indicating potential behavioral adaptations.
  • Overall energy intake from the buffet decreased significantly during weight loss and weight maintenance phases for both groups.
  • Postprandial levels of glucagon and pancreatic polypeptide were higher in the almond group, suggesting more favorable hormonal responses.
