Artificial Light at Night Changes How Zooplankton Are Spread by Depth in Lakes, from Individuals to Whole Communities

Abstract

Moderate-intensity artificial light at night (ALAN) is primarily associated with changes in the vertical distribution of zooplankton and fish aggregation.

  • Fish formed dense aggregations in the upper layer of water when illuminated by ALAN.
  • Zooplankton showed taxon-specific responses, with some species shifting deeper into the water column under ALAN.
  • Chaoborus flavicans consistently moved to deeper depths, while large cladocerans like Daphnia longispina exhibited reduced presence in surface layers.
  • Under ALAN, size-dependent vertical distribution patterns re-emerged at night, affecting predator-prey interactions.
  • Variations observed between study campaigns were attributed to context-dependent factors rather than seasonal changes.
