How artificial light at night affects early growth of attached marine communities

Abstract

Artificial light at night (ALAN) significantly affected the biomass and diversity of marine sessile communities over 24 weeks.

  • ALAN increased biomass during the initial phase of community succession but decreased the diversity index.
  • The dominance of brown algae was linked to the observed increase in biomass under ALAN conditions.
  • In the middle phase, ALAN altered community composition, reduced abundance, and increased the diversity index by suppressing dominant hydroid species.
  • The suppression of hydroid species may have been influenced by predation attracted by ALAN.
  • Effects of ALAN on community structure and biomass were consistent throughout the 24-week period.
