Artificial light at night linked to higher risk of overweight and obesity: a review and combined analysis

Updated

Abstract

Essence

This meta-analysis links higher exposure to modestly higher risks of and overweight.

Evidence

A systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis of 13 observational studies involving 867,647 participants found higher LAN exposure was associated with obesity (OR 1.14, 95% CI 1.07-1.22) and overweight (OR 1.07, 95% CI 1.00-1.15), with stronger signals in North America and Asia than in Europe.

Caveat

The evidence is observational and highly heterogeneous (I² = 92.5% for both pooled outcomes), so the association should not be read as proof that LAN causes obesity or overweight.
