Links between blood sugar control, weight loss, and heart disease risk with GLP-1 diabetes drugs

Updated

Abstract

In a study involving 60,079 patients, reductions in HbA1c and body weight were linked to decreased rates of major atherosclerotic cardiovascular events (MACE).

  • Each 1% absolute reduction in HbA1c is associated with a 25% reduction in the risk of 3-point MACE.
  • A 1 kg reduction in body weight is linked to a 7% reduction in the risk of 3-point MACE.
  • No significant association was found between reductions in systolic blood pressure and MACE.
  • Reductions in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were not associated with changes in MACE rates.
