Links between asthma, heart and metabolic diseases, and multiple health conditions in UK adults

Updated

Abstract

Asthma is associated with a 54% increased risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases and multimorbidity.

  • Among 51,335 participants with asthma, 60,033 developed cardiometabolic diseases (CMD) over a median follow-up of 13.8 years.
  • The progression to cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM) occurred in 7,048 participants (1.6%) who developed two or more CMDs.
  • Increased risk for all incident CMDs was observed, with hazard ratios of 1.54 for CMDs overall and 1.70 for comorbidity of type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease.
  • Transitions from no CMD to first CMD, first CMD to CMM, and no CMDs to death had hazard ratios of 1.29, 1.20, and 1.14, respectively.
  • These associations were more pronounced in women compared to men.
