Abstract

Post-natal deletion of the circadian clock gene Bmal1 in astrocytes resulted in decreased hippocampal perineuronal net abundance and abolished its circadian rhythm.

  • Astrocyte-specific deletion of Bmal1 led to increased expression of genes linked to extracellular matrix production and maintenance.
  • Hippocampal perineuronal nets, which are important for synaptic function, showed decreased abundance in astrocyte Bmal1 knockout mice.
  • The loss of Bmal1 in astrocytes abolished the circadian rhythm associated with perineuronal nets.
  • Increased synaptic strength was observed in astrocyte-specific Bmal1 knockout mice, but long-term potentiation was blunted.
  • Impaired learning and memory performance was noted in a novel object recognition task in the knockout mice.
