Comparing real-time and delayed remote doctor visits for diabetes care: a review of studies

Updated

Abstract

Of 2060 publications reviewed, 90 focused on teleconsultation for diabetes care.

  • Teleconsultation includes asynchronous methods (like email) and synchronous methods (like videoconferencing).
  • Asynchronous interactions improved clinical values and self-care more effectively than synchronous ones.
  • Synchronous methods showed better usability of technology and led to cost savings by reducing travel expenses.
  • Only a minority of studies reported significant improvements in patient-caregiver interactions and cost reductions.
  • The pooled analysis of 15 studies showed no significant change in hemoglobin A1c levels.
  • Future research should involve patients in designing teleconsultation tools to better meet their needs.
