Autism and the Mouth Microbiome: A Review of Microbe Interactions and Diversity

Updated

Abstract

Essence

A systematic review suggests people with autism may have subtle oral microbiome changes, especially in pathways tied to neurotransmitter metabolism.

Evidence

This systematic review of nine case-control and cross-sectional studies (n=8533; 2536 ASD and 5937 controls) found inconsistent diversity results but reported enrichment of dopamine and GABA degradation pathways and disrupted lysine metabolism in ASD.

Caveat

The evidence is heterogeneous and cross-sectional, with no consistent links to core ASD symptoms and little statistical support for proposed external influences such as diet or oral hygiene.
