Methylphenidate use in children and teens with autism

Abstract

High-dose methylphenidate may significantly reduce hyperactivity in children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), with a standardised mean difference of -0.78.

  • Improvements in hyperactivity were observed based on teacher ratings and parent ratings.
  • No significant benefits were found for inattention, impulsivity, or core symptoms of ASD, including social interaction and stereotypical behaviours.
  • The risk of adverse effects was low, with reduced appetite reported as a significant side effect.
  • Evidence quality for all outcomes was low or very low, indicating uncertainty in the findings.
  • Future research should focus on longer treatment durations and follow-ups to better understand the effects.
