Autophagy-related changes in oil glands and skin fat distribution mapped by mass imaging

Abstract

Lipid composition analysis in autophagy-deficient mouse ears revealed altered intensities of specific lipid species.

  • High spatial accuracy of lipid distribution was achieved using mass spectrometry imaging.
  • Ceramide phosphate species signals, including ceramide phosphate 44:2;O2, were more intense in autophagy-deficient tissue.
  • Selected sphingomyelin signals exhibited decreased intensities in the overall tissue profile, not limited to sebaceous gland areas.
  • Spatially resolved ion mass signatures can effectively distinguish between epidermis and sebaceous glands in tissue images.
