Current research on ayahuasca's effects on mental health, thinking skills, and brain imaging in people

Updated

Abstract

The review of 28 studies indicates that acute ayahuasca administration is well tolerated and associated with several positive effects.

  • Acute ayahuasca use increased introspection and positive mood while altering visual perceptions.
  • It activated brain regions related to emotional regulation and decreased activity in the default mode network.
  • Improvements in planning and inhibitory control were noted, alongside impairments in working memory.
  • Long-term ayahuasca use was linked to increased cortical thickness in the anterior cingulate cortex.
  • No increased psychopathology or cognitive deficits were associated with subacute and long-term use.
  • Enhanced mood, cognition, spirituality, and reduced impulsivity were noted with ongoing ayahuasca use.
