Fast and accurate field test for detecting Babesia vogeli infection in dogs using RPA and CRISPR-Cas12a

Abstract

The RPA/CRISPR-Cas12a method can detect Babesia vogeli with 100% clinical sensitivity and 96.8% specificity.

  • A rapid diagnostic method was developed that combines DNA amplification and a specific detection system.
  • This approach can identify as few as 100,000 copies of Babesia vogeli in under two hours.
  • The method demonstrated high agreement with established detection techniques, including qPCR-high resolution melting.
  • Concordance rates with qPCR-HRM were 97.5%, indicating reliability in detecting Babesia vogeli in canine blood samples.
  • The method may be suitable for point-of-care diagnostics, especially in low-resource environments.
