How Using Screens Before Bed Relates to Sleep in Early Teens

Updated

Abstract

Having a television or Internet-connected device in the bedroom is associated with shorter sleep duration one year later.

  • Leaving a phone ringer activated overnight is linked to higher odds of sleep disturbance and reduced sleep duration after one year.
  • Talking or texting on the phone, listening to music, and using social media are associated with both shorter sleep duration and greater sleep disturbance.
  • Behaviors related to bedtime screen use may contribute to difficulties in initiating and maintaining sleep in early adolescents.
  • These findings suggest a need for screening and guidance on bedtime screen behaviors in this age group.
