Abstract
Bilateral ablation of the X-organ/sinus gland complex significantly increased ovarian weight and VTG mRNA levels in immature female kuruma prawns.
- After bilateral ablation, ovarian development was induced within a 16-day monitoring period.
- Hemolymph VTG levels and VTG mRNA levels in the ovary increased significantly following bilateral ablation.
- VTG mRNA levels showed a significant increase just 12 hours after bilateral ablation.
- Unilateral ablation did not induce ovarian development or significantly change ovarian weight, hemolymph VTG levels, or VTG mRNA levels.
- The lack of response to unilateral ablation suggests that the remaining X-organ/sinus gland complex may continue to inhibit VTG synthesis.
