How removing one or both eyestalks affects egg yolk protein production in young female kuruma prawns

Updated

Abstract

Bilateral ablation of the X-organ/sinus gland complex significantly increased ovarian weight and VTG mRNA levels in immature female kuruma prawns.

  • After bilateral ablation, ovarian development was induced within a 16-day monitoring period.
  • Hemolymph VTG levels and VTG mRNA levels in the ovary increased significantly following bilateral ablation.
  • VTG mRNA levels showed a significant increase just 12 hours after bilateral ablation.
  • Unilateral ablation did not induce ovarian development or significantly change ovarian weight, hemolymph VTG levels, or VTG mRNA levels.
  • The lack of response to unilateral ablation suggests that the remaining X-organ/sinus gland complex may continue to inhibit VTG synthesis.
