How body fat and muscle changes measured by electrical impedance compare to X-ray and MRI during 12-month weight loss

Abstract

Nineteen obese adults lost an average of 8.9 kg (9.0%) during a 12-month weight loss intervention.

  • Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) accurately assessed fat loss compared to dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), with both methods reporting a loss of approximately 7.0 kg.
  • Skeletal muscle loss was estimated at 1.0 kg by BIA, which is lower than the 1.4 kg reported by DXA.
  • BIA overestimated visceral fat compared to MRI, particularly in males.
  • High correlations were observed between BIA and DXA for fat mass measurements, ranging from 0.91 to 0.99.
  • BIA was more effective in accurately detecting muscle and visceral fat cross-sectionally than tracking changes over time.
