Faster biological aging linked to heart disease and early death in a large population study

Abstract

Among 122,133 participants, 24,281 incident cardiovascular disease cases and 3,614 premature deaths were reported.

  • Higher biological age (BA) acceleration is linked to increased risks of incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) and premature mortality.
  • The largest adjusted hazard ratios for incident CVD and premature mortality in the highest quartile of BA acceleration were 1.32 and 1.10, respectively, for the Klemera-Doubal method.
  • For the PhenoAge algorithm, the corresponding hazard ratios for incident CVD and premature mortality were 1.23 and 1.21, respectively.
  • The associations between BA acceleration and health outcomes were particularly stronger in male participants.
