Faster Biological Aging Linked to the Progression from Heart, Kidney, and Metabolic Diseases to Multiple Illnesses, Dementia, and Death

Updated

Abstract

Higher biological age acceleration is significantly associated with increased risks of transitioning between disease states and reduced life expectancy.

  • BioAgeAccel is linked to a 24% increased risk of transitioning from healthy to first cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic disease (FCKMD).
  • The risk of progressing from FCKMD to multimorbidity is elevated by 20% with higher BioAgeAccel.
  • A 13% increased risk of moving from multimorbidity to dementia is associated with greater biological age acceleration.
  • BioAgeAccel is associated with a reduction in life expectancy, averaging 1.09 years from healthy to FCKMD and 1.75 years to multimorbidity.
  • Individuals with multimorbidity experience a life expectancy reduction of approximately 1.36 years, while those with dementia lose about 0.77 years.
