Faster biological aging and its link to heart disease over time

Updated

Abstract

Over a median follow-up of 13.52 years, 8,068 participants developed hypertension.

  • Each standard deviation increase in phenotypical age acceleration is associated with a higher risk of transitioning from healthy to hypertension (HR 1.14).
  • Accelerated biological ageing is linked to an increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (HR 1.14) following hypertension.
  • A similar increase in KDM biological age acceleration is associated with higher risks of transitioning from healthy to hypertension (HR 1.28) and from hypertension to cardiovascular diseases (HR 1.06).
  • Accelerated biological ageing is significantly associated with higher mortality risk from both hypertension and cardiovascular disease states.
  • Intermediate diseases may play a crucial role in how biological ageing influences the progression of these conditions.
