Faster biological aging linked to mental and behavioral disorders in UK Biobank participants

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Mental and behavioural disorders were linked to faster biological ageing, with genetic evidence suggesting possible causal roles for depression, insomnia, and anxiety.

Evidence

This UK Biobank cohort and two-sample Mendelian randomisation study analyzed 502,411 participants, including 78,674 with ICD-10 mental and behavioural disorders, plus genetic liability to six disorders across four ageing biomarkers.

Caveat

The observational findings remain associative, and the Mendelian randomisation signals varied by disorder and ageing measure, including slower GrimAge for bipolar disorder and no significant associations for schizophrenia.
