Using bispectral index to improve anesthesia dosing and recovery after surgery

Updated

Abstract

BIS-guided anaesthesia reduced propofol use by 1.30 mg/kg/hr and volatile anaesthetics by 0.17 MAC equivalents.

  • Anaesthesia guided by bispectral index (BIS) resulted in shorter recovery times across multiple measures.
  • Eye opening time decreased by 2.43 minutes, response to verbal command by 2.28 minutes, and extubation time by 3.05 minutes.
  • Postanaesthesia care unit stay was shorter by 6.83 minutes but time to home readiness was not significantly affected.
  • BIS-guided anaesthesia significantly reduced the incidence of intraoperative recall awareness in high-risk surgical patients.
