Using brain signal complexity to monitor adults and children during general anesthesia

Abstract

In 11 randomized controlled trials involving 962 participants, entropy monitoring reduced time to awakening after general anaesthesia by a mean difference of 5.42 minutes compared to standard practices.

  • Entropy monitoring is associated with a reduction in time to awakening after stopping general anaesthesia.
  • The mean difference in time to awakening for participants undergoing major surgeries was found to be -5.42 minutes, while it was -3.20 minutes for ambulatory procedures.
  • Awareness of intraoperative events was reported by only one patient in the standard practice group, making it difficult to assess the benefit of entropy monitoring.
  • Entropy monitoring may lead to a reduction in the amount of propofol and sevoflurane used, with mean differences of -11.56 mcg/kg/min and -3.42 mL, respectively.
  • The time to readiness to leave the postanaesthesia care unit was reduced by a mean difference of -5.94 minutes, though this finding was of low quality.
