Paravertebral nerve block with or without sedation compared to general anesthesia for women having breast cancer surgery

Updated

Abstract

Nine studies involving 614 participants indicated that paravertebral anaesthesia may reduce postoperative analgesic requirements compared to general anaesthesia.

  • Paravertebral anaesthesia probably reduces the incidence of postoperative nausea and vomiting.
  • It may lead to a shorter hospital stay and quicker ambulation after surgery.
  • Patients receiving paravertebral anaesthesia probably report higher satisfaction scores compared to those under general anaesthesia.
  • At 2 postoperative hours, paravertebral anaesthesia probably results in lower pain levels.
  • There is low-certainty evidence suggesting reduced pain at rest at 6 and 24 hours post-surgery.
