Blood flow restriction versus heavy weight training for rehabilitation after knee ligament surgery: a UK NHS trial

Abstract

Significantly greater and clinically important increases in self-reported function were observed with blood flow restriction resistance training (BFR-RT) compared to standard heavy-load resistance training (HL-RT).

  • Scaled strength significantly increased in both the injured and non-injured limbs for both BFR-RT and HL-RT, with no differences between groups.
  • Knee extension and flexion peak torque improved at all speeds for the non-injured limb, but no group differences were noted.
  • BFR-RT showed significantly greater preservation of knee extensor and flexor peak torque loss at higher speeds compared to HL-RT.
  • Muscle thickness and pennation angle increased similarly for both training methods, with no notable differences.
  • BFR-RT resulted in greater improvements in range of motion and reductions in knee joint pain and effusion compared to HL-RT.
