Reduced light response levels in people with opioid addiction

Abstract

Patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) showed significantly lower light exposure amplitudes compared to healthy controls.

  • A total of 73 patients with OUD and 49 healthy controls were monitored for personal light exposure and physical activity over one week.
  • Lower light exposure amplitudes in OUD patients were not explained by higher physical activity levels.
  • The findings suggest that patients with OUD may experience a weaker time cue for their circadian clock.
  • Blunted light exposure could indicate a potential area for improving sleep and circadian health in individuals with OUD.
