How the body’s clock gene Bmal1 relates to tumor growth and cancer drug response

Updated

Abstract

Knockdown of the Bmal1 gene accelerated tumour growth in mice.

  • Down-regulation of Bmal1 gene expression increased cell proliferation in laboratory settings.
  • Suppressing Bmal1 expression in colon cancer and fibroblast cells decreased cell death caused by anti-cancer drugs.
  • Bmal1 deficiency led to altered levels of several key proteins involved in cell cycle regulation, including increased cdc2 and cyclins.
  • Loss of Bmal1 reduced the expression of genes associated with apoptosis and cell cycle control.
  • Bmal1 may influence the development of tumours and the effectiveness of anti-cancer treatments.
