Butyrate from the gut as a possible antidepressant: A review of evidence and how it might work

Updated

Abstract

Essence

A systematic review suggests butyrate may have antidepressant potential, but human evidence is still minimal and mixed.

Evidence

This systematic review found two randomized controlled trials in humans, one showing no effect after 1 week of oral butyrate in healthy males and one showing reduced depressive and anxiety symptoms after 12 weeks in patients with ulcerative colitis, alongside 32 animal studies reporting improved depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors.

Caveat

The clinical evidence is limited to two small, context-specific trials with conflicting results, so the signal is driven mainly by preclinical animal studies rather than established antidepressant efficacy in humans.
