Caffeine helps protect mood and memory by changing brain cell levels and stress responses in sleep-deprived rats

Abstract

Caffeine treatment significantly improved memory and cognitive function in rats subjected to REM sleep deprivation.

  • Sleep deprivation during the REM phase leads to oxidative stress and neuroinflammation in the brain.
  • Caffeine administration reduced levels of hs-CRP and markers of oxidative stress in treated rats.
  • The treatment also attenuated the hyperactivation of the HPA axis associated with sleep deprivation.
  • Caffeine preserved neuronal density and architecture, suggesting a protective effect on brain cells.
  • Overall, caffeine may exert neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and cytoprotective effects.
