Rinsing the mouth with carbohydrate boosts strength exercise when energy stores are low

Updated

Abstract

Total volume workload was greater with carbohydrate mouth rinse (CHO MR) at 9354 ± 2051 kg compared to placebo at 8525 ± 1911 kg.

  • Carbohydrate mouth rinse is associated with increased low-load resistance exercise capacity in a glycogen-depleted state.
  • Participants performed a greater total number of repetitions in squats with CHO MR (107 ± 26) compared to placebo (92 ± 16).
  • The number of repetitions for bench press showed no significant difference between CHO MR (120 ± 24) and placebo (115 ± 22).
  • The effects were observed without differences in feeling or arousal between the two conditions.
