Cardiometabolic benefits and side effects of low-dose semaglutide versus tirzepatide

Updated

Abstract

Among 490,072 semaglutide-treated patients, 814 met criteria for sustained low-dose treatment.

  • Sustained low-dose tirzepatide was associated with higher 24-month adverse event rates compared to semaglutide for conditions including constipation and acute kidney injury.
  • Sustained low-dose semaglutide had higher rates of adverse effects such as otitis and ankle swelling compared to tirzepatide.
  • Sustained low-dose tirzepatide was linked to greater weight loss than semaglutide, with a mean 12-month percent weight change of -5.5% versus -2.2%.
  • Prescription patterns showed an increase in renal-supportive therapies after low-dose tirzepatide but not after low-dose semaglutide.
