How New Blood Sugar Drugs May Protect the Heart in Type 2 Diabetes: A Review

Abstract

A total of nine studies were included in the systematic review evaluating the cardiovascular effects of glucose-lowering therapies in Type 2 diabetes mellitus.

  • Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors consistently improved left ventricular remodeling, oxidative stress markers, and functional capacity.

  • Metformin did not show a significant reduction in cardiac stress biomarkers during long-term follow-up.
