Heart-protecting diabetes drugs, statins, and repeat major heart problems in people with type 2 diabetes and heart disease

Updated

Abstract

In the active comparator cohort, the combined use of a cardioprotective glucose-lowering drug and statin is associated with a 71% lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events compared to nonusers.

  • The study involved 15,404 individuals with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease over a mean follow-up of 2.7 years.
  • In the active comparator cohort, the hazard ratio for major adverse cardiovascular events was 0.71 for the combination of cardioprotective glucose-lowering drug and statin.
  • The time-varying cohort of 76,853 individuals showed a hazard ratio of 0.57 for the same combination over 4.7 years of follow-up.
  • No significant interaction was found between the cardioprotective glucose-lowering drug and statin usage in both cohorts.
  • Results suggested consistent lower risks across various sensitivity analyses, though biases inherent in real-world studies may affect causal interpretation.
