Low use and unequal delays in starting heart and kidney protective diabetes medicines for people with type 2 diabetes and high blood sugar

Abstract

Among 10,345 eligible patients, the rate of new prescribing for SGLT2 inhibitors increased from 0.9% to 4.3% and for GLP-1 receptor agonists from 1.2% to 5.2% over time.

  • Therapeutic inertia is defined as the failure to initiate or intensify therapy when treatment goals are not met.
  • Black patients were less likely than White patients to receive new SGLT2 inhibitor prescriptions (relative risk 0.59) and GLP-1 receptor agonists (relative risk 0.62).
  • Hispanic patients were less likely to receive new GLP-1 receptor agonist prescriptions (relative risk 0.48).
  • Overall initiation of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 receptor agonists remained low, indicating a significant barrier to effective diabetes management.
