Heart benefits of GLP-1 receptor drugs vary with kidney function: Updated analysis of clinical trials including the SOUL study

Updated

Abstract

GLP-1 receptor agonists reduced the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) by 17% in participants with estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFR) both below and above 60 mL/min/1.73 m².

  • The analysis included data from 70,534 participants across nine publications.
  • Pooled hazard ratios for MACE were 0.83 for both eGFR < 60 and ≥ 60 mL/min/1.73 m².
  • There was no evidence of effect modification based on eGFR levels, indicated by a pooled ratio of hazard ratios of 1.02.
  • Absolute risk reduction (ARR) was greater in participants with eGFR < 60, at 2.6% compared to 1.6% for those with eGFR ≥ 60.
  • Number needed to treat (NNT) was 39 for eGFR < 60 and 62 for eGFR ≥ 60.
