How heart, kidney, and metabolism problems and lifestyle relate to overall and specific causes of death

Updated

Abstract

A total of 319,291 participants were followed for a median of 13.7 years, resulting in 27,267 deaths.

  • CKM stages 2-4 are linked to progressively higher risks of all-cause mortality, with hazard ratios for Stage 4 at 2.30.
  • Higher CKM stages are also associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD)-specific mortality, reaching a hazard ratio of 10.40 for Stage 4.
  • Cancer-specific mortality risks rise with CKM stages, showing a hazard ratio of 1.32 for Stage 4.
  • Younger adults (<60 years) exhibit more pronounced associations between CKM stages and mortality risks.
  • A healthy lifestyle is correlated with lower all-cause and cause-specific mortality across all CKM stages, especially through non-smoking and adequate physical activity.
  • For all-cause mortality, a favorable lifestyle is associated with hazard ratios ranging from 0.51 for Stage 0 to 0.53 for Stage 4.
