Heart health and death rates after weight loss surgery compared to GLP-1 hormone treatments

Updated

Abstract

Bariatric surgery was associated with a 43% lower risk of mortality compared to glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist therapy in adults with obesity.

  • Bariatric surgery showed a 35% lower risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE).
  • The risk of heart failure was 55% lower with bariatric surgery.
  • For every 1000 patients treated, there were absolute reductions of 25 deaths, 25 cardiovascular events, and 23 heart failure cases.
  • The certainty of evidence for the risk of mortality and heart failure was moderate, while it was low for MACE.
  • The findings indicate potential long-term effectiveness differences between bariatric surgery and GLP-1RA therapy.
