In a meta-analysis of 10 cohort studies involving 4,844,555 women, those with celiac disease showed a significantly higher risk of obstetric complications.

  • Women with celiac disease had an increased risk of preterm birth, with an odds ratio of 1.35.
  • The risk of intrauterine growth restriction was notably higher in women with celiac disease, with an odds ratio of 2.48.
  • A significantly elevated risk of stillbirth was observed, with an odds ratio of 4.84 for women with celiac disease.
  • Women with celiac disease also faced a higher likelihood of low birthweight (odds ratio, 1.63) and being small for gestational age (odds ratio, 4.52).
  • No statistically significant difference in the incidence of preeclampsia was found (odds ratio, 2.45).
  • Treatment with a gluten-free diet is associated with a lower risk of preterm birth compared to untreated celiac disease.
