Beta-cell problems in COVID-19 and long COVID linked to inflammation, cell damage, and insulin release

Abstract

Persistent metabolic complications may occur following COVID-19 due to disruptions in glucose regulation.

  • SARS-CoV-2 infection is linked to impaired insulin secretion and metabolic disturbances post-COVID.
  • Mechanisms involved include pancreatic beta-cell dysfunction, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation.
  • Oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction are associated with post-COVID metabolic abnormalities.
  • Metabolic issues may present as transient dysglycaemia or progress to new-onset diabetes mellitus and metabolic syndrome.
  • The review highlights the need for understanding the reversibility of post-COVID beta-cell dysfunction.
