The adult central brain of Drosophila contains 240 circadian neurons with more than 25 different subtypes.

  • Single-cell RNA sequencing reveals a similar number of molecular subtypes among circadian neurons.
  • Transcriptional differences were observed among circadian neuron types across multiple time points.
  • Most transcriptional regulation in these neurons appears to be circadian in nature.
  • A small subset of transcripts is light-dependent, linked to immediate-early genes in mammals.
  • These light-dependent genes may influence gene expression and behavior related to circadian rhythms.
