Centipeda minima extract reduces brain inflammation by blocking the NF-κB signaling pathway

Abstract

Seven chemicals in the ethanol extract of Centipeda minima (ECM) were confirmed and quantified.

  • ECM inhibited the production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) in microglial cells, which could protect neuronal cells from inflammatory damage.
  • The extract attenuated the activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway, which is associated with reduced levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase 2 (COX2), and reactive oxygen species (ROS).
  • In a mouse model of neuroinflammation, ECM decreased the expression of proinflammatory mediators in the hippocampus.
  • Higher doses of ECM exhibited stronger anti-inflammatory activity compared to the positive drug dexamethasone.
