Low oxygen and blood flow damage tight connections in human brain blood vessel cells made from stem cells

Updated

Abstract

Cobalt chloride selectively disrupted barrier function in IMR90-derived brain microvascular endothelial cells.

  • Hypoxic stress from cobalt chloride and oxygen/glucose deprivation significantly impaired barrier function.
  • Disruption of barrier function was linked to the damage of tight junction complexes.
  • No cytotoxic effects were observed to contribute to the barrier disruption.
  • An observed disconnect between cell metabolic activity and barrier integrity suggests complex responses to stress.
