Chest MRI and CT scans linked to 10-year death risk in COPD

Updated

Abstract

CT and MRI measurements may improve predictions of 10-year all-cause mortality in ex-smokers with and without COPD.

  • CT airway and vessel measurements, MRI ventilation defect percent, and apparent diffusion coefficients were evaluated for their association with mortality risk.
  • The strongest predictors of 10-year mortality were CT informational measure of correlation and MRI apparent diffusion coefficient.
  • A machine-learning model incorporating clinical and imaging data achieved an area-under-curve (AUC) of 0.82 for predicting mortality, surpassing the clinical model's AUC of 0.76.
  • Adding MRI and CT texture measurements to clinical models provided distinct prognostic information for mortality risk.
